Strongbow Neon Night Surfing Bondi
It's been a while. An autumn without surfing. This is the time of the year when I'm nostalgic for summer.
Winter is soon, but it's still summer somewhere. This was posted onto NY Surfing Buddies, and I had to share.

Who said you can't rip it on the East Coast?
You may or may not have know about the Quiksilver Pro happening in Long Beach, New York.
This video from Quiksilver is of the final round between Kelly Slater and Owen Wright.
Surfing is so beautiful to watch, especially East Coast surfing!! Enjoy watching the waves!

Gluten-Free Pizzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzza in Cafeteria
It's been a hot minute since I wrote about gluten-free stuff.. I kinda am making this blog more about surfing cause surfing is awesome. So is being gluten-free. I should totally start a gluten-free surfer fun club.
Anyways, my hot lunch days/after school eating of elementary years has returned for better or worse. I really can't decide. Tastykake has gluten-free cookies. It is both awesome and terrible. Like great I can eat junk food again? For some reason though, having Celiac Disease makes you really miss being able to enjoy certain foods especially from your youth.
So this is cool. Tony's Pizza now has gluten-free pizza. Coming soon to cafeterias and apparently universities. Let's hope my college is included.

Ok, so it's got cheese on it, but it is a step in the right direction toward gluten-free school lunches. Next maybe they will tackle the gluten-free soy cheese pizza.
Love,
DJ Sassafras

Ultimate Wave Tahiti in Philadelphia!
Dear East Coast Surfers and Surfing Movie Fans,
So I found out about another surfing movie: The Ultimate Wave Tahiti! This one features Kelly Slater.
I had heard about it somewhere before in the past, but today I discovered it is playing in Philadelphia.
It is being shown at the IMAX theater at the Franklin Institute. Looks like there are two show times daily at 10:30am and 12:30pm. It is a rather short documentary..... but it is about surfing and huge waves and it is on a giant screen in 3D. What could be better!?
Now I am not one who is crazy about how everything is in 3D, when it comes to movies. I don't mind that the actual world is in 3D.Anywhos, I think this is one movie that would look really good in 3D. I've always wanted to surf in Tahiti but yeah I doubt I will ever surf anything that is over 10 feet. But who knows what the future holds.
Here is more info:

Also this is the official site for the movie: http://www.ultimatewavetahiti.com/

PS. If you see it, please inform me how it was. Thanks pals.

Quiksilver Surfing USA Championship
One more reason to wish I was in my dreamtown of Huntington Beach, California.
This week and weekend is the Quiksilver 2011 Surfing USA Championships.
Some of the events are airing live this Friday June 24th and Saturday June 25th. Here is the link to watch:http://www.surfline.com/quikusachamps/
It does not say what time it will be showing. I suppose in the early afternoon? I would just periodically check the site.
Enjoy the surfing watching!!!

Summer Season is officially Swinging!
IT IS SUMMER as of a few hours ago.
Time for popsicles, ocean waters, turkey burgers, hopscotching, road trips, dancy dancing, blowing bubbles, lightning bug catching.... Oh boy oh boy! I am excited.
I also found a few favorite treat for the summer. It is a popsicle but tastes like ice cream. But it is gluten-free and dairy-free and under 100 calories! http://mompops.net/index.html Try the chocolate banana! It is seriously one of the greatest things since decent tasting gluten free sliced bread.
Happy Summer!

Ocean Outfitters
12 days till summer. With the air being 141 degrees, I truly wish to be in the waves. Alas, I cannot due to landlocked-ness.
If you have the fortune of actually getting to the beach in the near future, make a stop at Ocean Outfitters in Wildwood Crest, NJ.
I have yet to pay a visit this year to my beloved surf shop. These people taught me how to surf after all! I have been wanting to make a little post about them for centuries.
The surf instructors are really kind, funny (especially Dean!), and very helpful. This is the place to start if you are completely new to surfing!
The surf camps (pictured above) are especially awesome and great for beginners. To really get your feet wet (Teehee surfing/ocean pun) I would recommend going to a 2 or 3 day surf camp. It was a great experience for me to learn surfing with other beginners. Though, if you have surfing experience, you can still participate in the camps. I have for the past four years. Each time, I learn something new and improve in my surfing abilities.
They also have the option to rent boards for the day. Also, don't forget to buy some belly jelly from the store to help prevent board rashes. I learned the hard and painful way.
Gosh, all this beach talk is making me even more antsy to get down there, on a board, and into the water.
I miss you Ocean Outfitters!
Here are some interweb links for Ocean Outfitters.

Waves of Film Festivities
MORE SURFING MOVIES, YES!
I found this amazing discovery a few weeks ago. (Hmm, found a discovery, bit redundant.)
I was contemplating going to the Tribeca Film Festival and I saw that a surfing documentary was playing. That is not the most awesome part! In my little interweb search, I found that New York has a whole film festival devoted just to surfing films! What!?
The New York Surf Film Festival is happening in September. This coming fall will be the 4th annual one. Wish I had known about it for the past three years. They are still accepting submissions through May 15th. So the schedule of films playing will probably be released sometime in the summer.
Very very psyched about this. I'll keep you in the loop when the dates and films are officially announced.
Also if you can make it to Tribeca this week, check out the documentary Splinters. There are two more showings- Thursday at 8:30 and Saturday at 2:30. Check out the trailer on the post below this one(because for whatever reason, the video doesn't want to be in this post). It looks really interesting though! Ticket info here

Surfing Movies Are Swelling Up
I have yet to see this movie, but fear not I will soon! It is based on the shark attack of surfer Bethany Hamilton and the book she wrote about it. I read the book last summer before I knew it was going to be a movie. It is a pretty inspiring story and an uplifting read. So see it!
Also, another surfing movie is premiering at Tribeca Film Festival this month. Speaking of surfing films and New York, I made a wonderful discovery which I will share soon.

Soul Surfing Searching
I involuntarily took the winter off from writing on this bloggy thing. Though, it seems fitting. Talking about endless summers when it's snowing out does not seem to work. Believe me, I've tried.
It is now spring. The long winter year has passed by. It's bittersweet for me. I grew another year older in the cold weather.
Perhaps you care to know what I did during those winter months. Here follows a brief synopsis..
January
I almost always end up watching countless surfing movies during this month. Why do I do this to myself? I just end up craving the waves under my feet. It didn't help that my family acquired more TV channels, including FUEL. This channel features a lot of surfing, snowboarding, and skateboarding. Several days during winter break, FUEL showed Endless Summer and I felt obligated to watch while of course eating some Christmas cake. Then, I realized Bluecrush was on instant Netflix... hence a lazy Sunday with my sister ensued.
I returned to school reluctantly.
February= epitome of cold and colds. That sums it up.
March aka Now
Last week, the 23rd to be exact was awful. Not only because of the cold rain, but because in the back of my head all I could think was "one year ago today, I was surfing in Huntington Beach." The next day, I kept thinking "One year ago today I was at the Babycakes in Los Angeles." I will return to you, California.
Now too much time has become between me and many things- surfing, music, but not gluten free baking. I have had plenty of cupcakes. My feet are getting antsy to have a board under them. My favorite surf shop Ocean Outfitters keeps updating its FB page on how new boards are coming in and that the ocean water temperature is getting warmer.
I wish I could say I did some soul searching (or even surfing) this winter. Maybe I did without knowing it? It is possible. I do feel older. I feel a bit different than I did at the end of December.
Until I will see my beloved surf shop and the ocean again, I must settle with surf movies, in particular Soul Surfer! Hooray it is opening next week! You shall hear about this movie very soon.
Love,
DJ Sassafras
